A radiator replacement involves turning off the heat, draining the system, removing the old unit, fitting new brackets and the new radiator, reconnecting pipes, refilling, and bleeding air out, with the process taking a few hours for a simple swap or longer if pipes need adjusting, often requiring a plumber for complex jobs or different-sized radiators to avoid pipework changes. Expect some mess from draining water, potential for drilling, and system pressure adjustments afterward

Before the Replacement (Preparation)

  • Turn Off & Cool Down: Shut down your central heating and let it cool completely.

  • Isolate Radiator: Close both the Thermostatic Radiator Valve (TRV) and the lockshield valve on the radiator.

  • Measure Up: If getting a new radiator, ensure it matches pipe centers (distance between valves) for an easy swap; otherwise, expect pipework adjustments.

  • Check Wall Type: Use a stud detector to find wall studs/noggins for secure bracket mounting, especially for heavy radiators.

The Process

  1. Drain the System: Attach a hose to the drain valve (often at the bottom) and open the bleed valve (top) to empty water into a bucket.

  2. Remove Old Radiator: Disconnect pipework and lift it off its wall brackets (you might need help for heavy ones).

  3. Install New Radiator:

    • Install new wall brackets if needed, ensuring they're level and secure.

    • Hang the new radiator and reconnect the pipework using new PTFE tape or paste for seals.

  4. Refill & Bleed: Open valves, refill the system (checking pressure), and use a bleed key to release trapped air until water flows steadily from the bleed valve.

  5. Test: Turn heating back on and check for leaks and even heating.

What to Expect During/After

  • Water Spillage: Some water will come out, so have towels/buckets ready.

  • System Pressure Drop: Boiler pressure will likely drop and need topping up.

  • Cold Spots: Until bled, the new radiator may have cold spots.

  • Pipework alteration: To make sure that the valves connect to the original pipework..

  • New Fixings: Expect to drill new holes for brackets.
